Getting to and Around Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is straightforward to navigate once you understand one thing: distances are often bigger than they look. Attractions are spread between the main city, Saadiyat Island, Yas Island and other districts, so planning each day by area saves both time and money.

Arriving by air

Zayed International Airport is Abu Dhabi’s main international gateway and lies east of the central city, close to Yas Island. Taxis are an easy option after a flight, while public transport can be useful if you are travelling light and have more time.

Taxis are genuinely useful

For most visitors, taxis are one of the simplest ways to get around. Official taxis are easy to recognise and widely available, and they are particularly convenient when travelling between attractions that are not close to the same bus route.

Public buses

Abu Dhabi has an extensive bus network and buses can be a useful budget option. They require a little more planning than taxis, especially if you are trying to fit several attractions into one day. Check current routes and payment requirements before travelling, as transport arrangements can change.

Walking has limits

Areas such as the Corniche are enjoyable on foot, but Abu Dhabi is not a city where you should expect to walk everywhere. Heat is another important factor, particularly during the warmer months.

Plan by neighbourhood

My preferred approach is simple: combine nearby attractions. Give Saadiyat its own day, Yas Island another, and group central sights together. You will spend less time travelling and more time actually experiencing Abu Dhabi.
