Welcome to Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi can look like a city built entirely on a grand scale, but that is only part of its appeal. The capital of the United Arab Emirates mixes monumental architecture, beaches, islands and ambitious museums with quieter glimpses of Emirati history and everyday life.

For a first visit, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the obvious starting point. It is one of the city’s defining landmarks and a place where the architecture is every bit as impressive in person as it looks in photographs.

Culture, coast and desert

Abu Dhabi is not one single experience. Saadiyat Island has become a major cultural district, with Louvre Abu Dhabi among its best-known attractions. The Corniche gives you a completely different side of the city, with a long waterfront, beaches and views across the Gulf.

Then there is Yas Island, where the pace changes again. Theme parks, Yas Marina Circuit, shopping and entertainment make it particularly popular with families and anyone who wants a more energetic day.

Look beyond the skyline

I would not spend an entire trip moving between modern attractions. Qasr Al Hosn, local markets and traditional Emirati food add context to the city you are seeing. If you have more time, a desert excursion or a trip towards Al Ain reveals another side of the emirate altogether.

Take your time

Distances in Abu Dhabi can be larger than they first appear on a map, so resist the temptation to squeeze everything into one day. Pick an area, explore it properly and leave time for a meal or coffee. Abu Dhabi rewards a slower visit much more than a checklist of landmarks.
